Helloooo everyone! Here we are, three months into the launch of Guerrilla Sex Ed, and we’re still here. I continue to add new resources to the site on a quasi-regular basis (have you seen the coupon code for Dorrie Lane’s Wondrous Vulva Puppet?). I add new sex educator spotlights and news roundups to the blog every month (though I plan to build out the blog even more). And I finally got my shit together and added an advocacy page to the site, for those who want to advocate for better sex ed within their districts. So be sure to pop in and check out all of that.
I have to say, launching GSE has been a ton of fun. Interviewing educators every month has been especially delightful because we get to nerd out about sex ed and, well, it’s helped me feel more firmly placed within this community.
Pre-GSE, I was just a journalist. Even working for AASECT or volunteering for the Center for Sex Ed or attending the National Sex Ed Conference, I always had this sense that I was on the outside looking in. Which is textbook impostor syndrome, right? Interviewing my personal superheroes for the Sex Educator Spotlight series has shown me that there are so many paths to providing resources to those who need them the most.
Also, managing GSE emboldened me to apply for membership in the newly launched Sex Education Alliance, a community of independent sex educators and non-profits who have family education as their focus. The group was founded by Kim T. Cook (of Teen World Confidential), Melissa Pintor Carnagey (of Sex Positive Families), and Amy Lang (of Birds&Bees&Kids). And, wonder of wonders, they actually let me in. ;)
In fact, they’ve asked me to be a part of their very first Meet + Greet, which will take place on Zoom on January 5 at 2 p.m. EST. You can pre-register here. I’d love for you to join us so I can get to know even more of you.
In the meantime, if you know other teens… parents… educators who might benefit from the information on Guerrilla Sex Ed, please forward them this email and encourage them to subscribe.
Or just point them toward the site itself!
Sharing this information gives me the warm fuzzies.
Thanks all. - Steph :)
